Taber Oscillating Sand Tester 6160

The Model 6160 measures relative resistance to surface abrasion and marring, mainly of transparent materials and coatings for windows and lenses, but also paints, plastics and metals. Rigid 100 mm square specimens (up to 12.5 mm thick) are mounted flush in the bottom of a tray of abrasive (quartz silica 6/9, alumina …) which a scotch-yoke drive shifts back and forth to produce a random scratch pattern. Stroke 6.5–150 mm and speed 100–200 cycles/min; an optional kit enables the Bayer test on lenses.
